I've been coding on small platforms since Texas Instruments introduced the programmable calculator; and designing interactive applications since the first Macintosh computers were introduced in 1984.
I consider myself a hybrid geek, part bit twiddler and part graphic designer/artist. This website introduces me and provides examples of my skill and talent.
My design philosophy is: Imagery is fundamental to communication.
Art is the oldest form of communication. Long before mankind was speaking, we were drawing pictures on cave walls and rocks. The state of the art in communication has progressed dramatically but our ability to communicate effectively is still grounded in graphic imagery. We've all heard the saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words." In truth, that is an understatement. To describe even a simple picture would take many more than a thousand words. The notion of using images to convey ideas and information is universal, it crosses all cultures, languages and intellectual disciplines.
When we speak, we often use metaphores to "illustrate" our messages. These metaphores are used to create images in the minds of listeners. Mathematicians and economists often use graphs to illustrate thier complex theories.
So, imagery is fundamental to communication. Effective use of imagery is a combination of skill and talent. That is the basis of my approach to web design, multimedia production, and layout for print. And, when graphics are used to deliver information, if those graphics do not add to the effectiveness of the message, they subtract from it.
